Biography/ Statement of purpose

In this fast paced, ever changing world that we live in today, I am intrigued by our strong desire to remember and conserve certain memories. Often memories of childhood and family life are the most poignant and insightful. It is these memories and sensations that I hope to communicate in my work.

I am equally fascinated by the way certain objects can transform out thoughts and spring memories from the past into life. Holding various potent objects can set off reminders. Picking up a sea shell on the beach, a bird flying overhead, or bringing a teacup to ones lips, the tastes become a return trip to another time. These visual and tactile clues bring into focus some lost recollections and as humans we need to communicate these sensations in are own sometimes silent ways. In very simple terms my work revolves around how we remember, what we remember.

You could say I was born into becoming a potter. My Greek heritage and ethnic background places a huge importance on clay work. Every museum is filled with the famous red and black Attic Ware. I even have a distant relative who is one of Greece’s most recognized 20th century potters. In actual fact I came to clay in a rather normal way.

During my study of Fine Arts at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan I was majoring in drawing and painting when I came upon a ceramics class. One touch of clay and I became obsessed. Further studies were at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana and the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta.
